Step back into ancient history at the Matsusaka City Cultural Asset Center, also known as the Haniwa Museum. This unique museum showcases an extraordinary collection of haniwa—clay figures used in ancient funerals—excavated from the Takarazuka burial mound.
The highlight of the museum is the remarkable haniwa shaped like a ship, which stands as the largest of its kind ever discovered in Japan. This exceptional artifact, along with other haniwa and relics, was officially designated a National Treasure in 2024, offering visitors an unparalleled opportunity to connect with Japan’s ancient traditions.
The museum itself is housed in a charming redbrick warehouse nearly 100 years old, adding an extra layer of historical ambiance. In addition to its exhibits, the building serves as a creative space for local residents’ artistic activities, creating a vibrant cultural hub within Matsusaka.
