Castle Guard Residences

Explore the Castle Guard Residences, a captivating glimpse into the samurai past of Matsusaka. These historic homes, built during the late Edo period (1603–1868), once housed the samurai warriors of the Kishu Domain who were tasked with guarding Matsusaka Castle. Amazingly, some of the descendants of these samurai families still live here, preserving the traditions and heritage of this remarkable site to this day.

Stroll along the stone-paved street lined with beautifully preserved residences on both sides, a view that embodies the charm and cultural legacy of Matsusaka. This area has been designated a National Important Cultural Property. One of the homes on the western side of the street has been opened to the public, offering a closer look at the architecture and lifestyle of the castle guards who once lived here.
