In the peak of summer in mid-July, the streets of Matsusaka clear the way for striking structures of gold and red—portable shrines, resting on the shoulders of men, women, and children in traditional white and navy clothing. The Matsusaka Gion Festival, which will be held on July 18-19, 2026, draws visitors from all over to the city center where portable shrines are tossed, swung, and paraded to the thundering beat of taiko drums in an old tradition originating from Kyoto's Gion Festival.

After sunset on the final day, dancers in brilliant blue and pink gather around a small stage from which a single, powerful voice sings the story of the city to the beat of a simple drum. This is the Matsusaka Shongai Song and Dance, the oldest folk song in the city’s history said to have originated from a celebration of Matsusaka Castle’s completion in 1588. Onlookers are encouraged to join in this simple traditional dance to celebrate summer in the local style!
As one of the city’s three biggest festivals, the Gion Festival lasts two full days and features booths, performances, traditional dances, and more in addition to the main portable shrine parades. Don’t miss this lively summer tradition!
